Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's Real Danger: Technological Decline.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" policies represent an existential risk to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry 13.5% increase for the European Union. Over this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing disparity stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population, is split among twenty-seven separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
