We present a dare for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like typical physical horror, but beneath Together lies a intense meditation about how we choose to love each other.
A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics
Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The story commences when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the countryside for her career. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.
The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.
Complex Characterizations
A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.
Both characters confront the kind of problems that come with long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.
A Debated Finale
Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
