Larian Studios Unveil a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The speculation about the recent awards show was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This distinction implies that the team could be building a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and flexible progression—traits that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve if you're playing as a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, letting players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in diverse methods, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
