Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
